STAR WARS Roleplaying: The Lannik Sector Pt. 2 - The Lannik System
The Lannik System is a small mid-rim system between Hutt Space, Bothan Space and the Core Worlds. The system is rich in rare minerals that are valued in technology manufacturing across the galaxy. The system never was of much importance in galactic affairs. It is home to the Lannik species, who in 2 BY live under harsh Imperial occupation on their home world, the moon of Lannik IV. The system’s mining output is exported through the Knife of Nambeno trading station. The Imperial war machine maintains only a negligible direct presence in the system. The galactic crime syndicates and Hutt clans use the system to sell slaves into the Empire.
Places of Interest in the Lannik System
Lannik II
Stripmine Settlement on Lannik II |
Like most of the Lannik system, it's main mining planet has seen its best and most busy days. What remains presently, is a hopelessly polluted, strip-mined rock, plagued by icy temperatures and fast-moving storms. Most settlements are located around the still active mining operations. Lannik II never had a civilization of its own before the mining guilds came in during the resource rush of the Clone Wars. The planet only has very primitive indigenous life, among them the dreaded red flu, a debilitating fungal infection, that impacts all mammalian species. The city of Panos Sot, the planet's biggest settlement of about a million inhabitants, houses the Lannik II prime spaceport. Most people on Lannik II either work in the mines, or in one of the many industries supporting or adjacent to the mining operations. Some of the active mines are locations of Imperial penal camps, employing forced labor to remove the last remaining valuable resources from the planet. The presence of these camps is a thorn in the side of many free mine workers, who are forced to compete with the labor cost of the enslaved. Life outside of cities does not exist, although there are rumors of bandit gangs and scavengers making abandoned mining towns their homes. Supposedly the wastelands of Lannik II also harbor remnants of the Lannik royalists, who escaped an Imperial penal camp a few years ago but were never heard from again.
Lannik Asteroid Belt
Asteroid mining in the Lannik System |
Between the uninhabited gas giant Lannik III and Lannik IV with its capital moon lies the system's asteroid belt, which geologists have determined came into existence when two planets collided and subsequently broke apart a few million years ago. Unlike on Lannik II, the asteroid mines here still yield materials important to Imperial interests. Therefor the various mining outposts across the belt, combined with a never ceasing presence of bandit raiders suspected in cahoots with the Rebel Alliance result in a steady Imperial Navy presence around these parts. The Empire provides protection for the Lannik Mining Consortium, which operates most of the extractive outposts. But a few independent contractors still operate in the asteroid belt, run by private entrepreneurs whose claims to the rocks they are mining predate the founding of the Mining Consortium. Given that some of these private operations still yield lucrative results, the belt sees constant low-level conflict between the Mining Consortium and its Imperial protectors, marauders, and mercenaries hired to protect the independent operations.
Lannik IV
The Royal Palace in Arazi |
The gas giant's second moon is fully habitable. The city of Arazi houses the Imperial sector command and the seat of governor Krestner, as well as the headquarters of the Lannik Mining Consortium, an Imperial charter guild. Governor Krestner elected to turn to the Royal Palace of Lannik into his governor’s mansion, much to the chagrin of the local population. In the system, Lannik IV has the highest presence of Imperial armed forces, who with an iron fist enforce order and Imperial supremacy over any notions of returning the system to its former independent status. The second moon supplies most of the systems foodstuffs through a large network of farms. Stormtrooper contingents can be encountered all over.
